There aren’t too many places in the world where you might end up with a penguin on your bodyboard, but South Africa is one of them. A bodyboarding coach with Cape Town-based Bodyboard South Africa recently came face to face with an endangered African penguin, and it wanted a lesson. A video on social media shows the bodyboarder holding onto his board as the penguin stands on it and balances through the rolling waves.
Aden Kleve is the bodyboarding coach in the video who waves at comrades ashore to alert them to the unique situation. Seth Buncombe filmed the video, and we presume he is one of the people laughing and commentating in the background.
“That’s so sick . . . no way!” one of the bystanders says.
Another chimes in: “That’s insane.”
“Yo, surf’s up, brah!” one of them shouts as the penguin actually manages to stay upright on the bodyboard.
“We had an insane encounter with the endangered African Penguin during a bodyboard session in Cape Town, one we will never forget,” wrote Bodyboard South Africa in the Instagram post sharing the video.
